Is it possible to realize the ideals of democracy?
The crises of democracy arise in every part of the modern world. Many say it is because the elected representatives represent not the people’s voices but the voices of the social and economic elites. Is there more to this issue that this simple explanation?
Rancière argues that in his initial discussions, we often have a vague understanding of democracy's generic traits. Shockingly, he concludes that achieving perfect democracy is inherently impossible due to the system's innate contradictions. However, he emphasizes the importance of understanding these contradictions to guide the future direction of democracy towards more actionable forms.
In the latter part, Rancière sheds light on the true value of democracy, exploring the history of political movements that have strived to realize democratic ideals. As he progresses, he discusses the challenges modern democracies face due to globalization and capitalism, suggesting that contemplating democracy's path with him can lead to improved political frameworks.
