Emotions and Philosophy

A philosopher of emotion who reinterprets negative feelings

A philosophy lecture that reads envy, jealousy, and anger as signals for living

For a long time, emotions like envy, jealousy, and anger have been cast as negative — things to be overcome or eliminated. But Krista K. Thomason argues that these emotions are not simply problems to be removed; they are important signals through which we come to understand our lives. This lecture series begins by redefining the very nature of emotion, then critically examines how classical thinkers — the Stoics, Confucius, and Aristotle — approached emotional life. It raises the question of whether the age-old ideal of controlling or cultivating emotions is truly sound, and explores the costs of emotional suppression. The series goes on to analyze the cultural and philosophical roots of why negative emotions have been labeled "bad," before drawing on Nietzsche's thought to offer a new framework for seeing emotions as resources for living. Through Emotions and Philosophy, a five-part series with philosopher Krista K. Thomason — one of today's most compelling voices on emotional life — viewers are invited to reframe negative emotions as assets, and to ask what we must learn to accept and understand within ourselves.

- American philosopher

- Associate Professor of Philosophy, Swarthmore College

- National Humanities Center Fellow (2021)

- Author of Dancing with Demons

Krista K. Thomason is an American philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at Swarthmore College. A leading voice in the philosophy of emotion, she has drawn significant attention for reinterpreting negative emotions — such as envy, jealousy, and anger — not as flaws in human life, but as meaningful signals. While traditional philosophy has largely treated emotions as impulses to be controlled or suppressed, Thomason argues that emotions are essential indicators of our values and our orientation toward life. Her current work explores the relationship between emotion and reason, as well as the ethical significance of emotional experience, offering a fresh philosophical perspective on what it means to feel.
