The 200-Year History and Present of the Creationism vs. Evolution Debate
Michael Ruse's lecture series, "Evolution and Religion," offers a multifaceted exploration of the long-standing debate between evolution and Christianity. The first lecture highlights two approaches to interpreting the Bible, biblical literalism and Neo-Augustinianism, shedding light on the diversity of perspectives within the Christian faith. In the following lecture, he examines Darwin’s journey to publish the theory of evolution and its impact on the academic world, posing the thought-provoking question, “Can a Darwinist be a Christian?” to discuss evolution and human societal progress. He also addresses why creationism does not qualify as a scientific theory and shares firsthand accounts of the creationism-evolution controversy in the United States. The final lecture delves into the efforts of various thinkers and scholars who sought to bridge the gap between evolution and religion, exploring attempts to find a common ground between faith and science.
