A new philosophy that will advocate animal rights and justice
Animals’ lives are often the subject of ethical concern because they are greatly influenced by human behavior. Today, more so than ever, with the current transgression of human understanding of ethology, many are raising their voices in effort to seek answers to the nature of relationship between humans and animals. And this is a key reason behind Martha C. Nussbaum’s particular interest on the subject of animals as someone who has voiced varying ideas and concerns in relations to social justice, human rights, education, and women.
Of course, even before Nussbaum, philosophical theories supporting the claim about guaranteeing animal rights existed. However, flawed theories are bound to provide flawed advice. Nussbaum proposes a new philosophical theory, the “Capabilities Approach,” which overcomes the limitations of existing theories by carefully examining existing philosophical theories.
In recent times, animal rights have become a topic that has taken on the spotlight at the forefront of philosophy. Martha C. Nussbaum invites you to take a step inside the forest of reason on behalf of animals, the companions of mankind.

Martha C. Nussbaum is an American philosopher and ethicist who is currently a professor of Ethics and Law at the University of Chicago. Nussbaum, considered one of the most influential philosophers to currently exist, is particularly renowned for providing new insights into modern moral and political issues through classical research approaches. Nussbaum's philosophy does not stop at theoretical considerations, but further expands focus to present practical alternatives to current problems at hand.
Together with Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Nussbaum has developed the "Capabilities Approach,” which provides the basis for the annual Human Development Index (HDI) announced by the UN, greatly influencing modern ethics and political philosophy. Her books include Poetic Justice: The Literary Imagination and Public Life, Hiding from Humanity: Disgust, Shame, and the Law, Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach, The Monarchy of Fear: A Philosopher Looks at Our Political Crisis, and Justice for Animals: Our Collective Responsibility.
