How to become free.
Freedom. It’s such a familiar word, and a concept that most of us think we know well. However, do we really? Each person and epoch have a different idea of what freedom is. The concept is rather difficult to define. What exactly is freedom?
In his lecture series, Slavoj Žižek tackles the intricate concept of freedom, initiating the discussion with the paradoxes that surround it. He begins by offering his definition of true freedom, setting the stage for a deeper exploration into the nature and implications of liberty. In subsequent lessons, Žižek explores the capability to reinterpret historical events, highlighting the fluidity of our understanding of the past. He then addresses contemporary issues under the themes of "liberty" and "freedom," analyzing the impact of a corporate neo-feudal order and job instability on societal radicalism.
In a thought-provoking lecture titled "False Peace," he critiques societal passivity, questioning why people often fail to act against known issues. Finally, he delves into the ideological underpinnings of Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine, providing a critical view of the motivations and philosophies that guide modern geopolitical conflicts.
