What is Life?

The frontline of modern biology, searching for the definition of life

Paul Nurse

Paul Nurse is an English Biologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001 for his discoveries of protein molecules that control the division of cells. Nurse served as the 61st President of the Royal Society (2010~2015). During his tenure, he was said to be the most influential president since Isaac Newton and Thomas Huxley. He is currently the director of the Francis Crick Institute in London, the biggest biomedical laboratory in Europe where more than 1,300 scientists are conducting advanced research in biology fields related to life and disease.

As an educator, he is committed to developing ”good” scientists, by which he means ones with a passion to find the answer to questions, with good technical abilities, and with a certain set of attitudes, including self-criticism and open-mindedness. Paul Nurse was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur and has advised the UK Prime Minister and the Cabinet for fifteen years.

Can Cancer Be Cured?

The secret of cancer cells, explained by Robert Weinberg, who first discovered the oncogene

Robert Weinberg

Robert Weinberg is an American biologist best known for first discovering the oncogene. It was a turning point in cancer research when he found this type of gene, which transforms a normal cell into a cancer cell. Later, he also found the first tumor suppressor gene, paving the way to an understanding of how cancer begins. He received the National Medal of Science from the National Science Foundation and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his research.

Dr. Weinberg has been a professor at the MIT Department of Biology since 1982 and has consistently published new breakthrough research on cancer and metastasis. Among his publications, The Biology of Cancer has become a renowned textbook in this field, read by cancer researchers and molecular biologists worldwide.

The Neuroscience of Fear

The mechanisms of fear and anxiety explained through brain science

Joseph E. LeDoux

Joseph LeDoux is an American neuroscientist who was the first to discover that it is the amygdala that produces a behavioral response when we feel a threat. Under the guidance of Michael Gazzaniga, who pioneered the second-generation cognitive science called cognitive neuroscience, Joseph LeDoux received a PhD while studying split-brain patients at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. From 1989, he served at the Center for Neural Science at NYU as an associate professor. He was named a university professor, the highest honor for a faculty member at NYU, in 2005 and is now the director at the Emotional Brain Institute.

Joseph LeDoux received the William James Book Award in 2014 for ‘Anxious,’ in which he sought to correct the misunderstood mechanisms of fear and anxiety. As a fun aside, he is a songwriter and lead singer of a folk-rock band, The Amygdaloids, formed in 2004 with his colleague and other academics from NYU. The lyrics carry with them some scholarly insights into the mind and brain.
