- Professor of Psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine
- Began research into PTSD in the 1970s
- Established the Trauma Research Foundation (1982)
- Former president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS)
- Former co-director of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN)
- Published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles
- Benjamin Rush Award (1999)
Bessel van der Kolk is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine and the President of the Trauma Research Foundation. His focus on traumatic stress began in the 1970s while working with Vietnam war veterans suffering from PTSD. During the 1980s, he established the Trauma Research Foundation, unveiling the impact of trauma on brain and body development.
By using neuroimaging to illustrate how PTSD alters the brain, he has pioneered new approaches to trauma treatment. He ie author of "Psychological Trauma," "Post-traumatic Stress Disorder," "Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on Mind, Body, and Society" (co-authored) and "The Body Keeps the Score"
