Antonio Damasio

The Neuroscience of Feeling

World-renowned neuroscientist who revealed the origins of consciousness and the self

How do feelings create the mind, consciousness, and the sense of self?

Antonio Damasio, a world-renowned neuroscientist, explores the deep question of how feelings, consciousness, and the sense of self emerge from the brain. In this lecture, he explains how the nervous system constructs subjective experience—the felt quality of being alive—and why this process is fundamental to understanding the human mind.

Drawing on decades of research, Damasio reveals how the brain and body work together to generate emotions and feelings, and how these feelings are essential for reasoning, decision-making, and social behavior. He challenges the traditional view that reason and emotion are separate, arguing instead that feelings are a necessary foundation for rational thought and human flourishing.
