Barry J. Marshall

Humans and Helicobacter

An Australian physiologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 for his work demonstrating the harmful effects of Helicobacter pylori.

Lecture on the virulence of Helicobacter pylori and the methods for its diagnosis and eradication.

Dr. Barry Marshall (73), winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, opened his first lecture with his story from 40 years ago when he discovered Helicobacter pylori, yet struggled to gain recognition from the academic community. He recalled the circumstances that compelled him to drink the bacteria to prove its virulence, and criticized the intellectual arrogance often found in the medical field. Dr. Marshall emphasized that the primary reason Helicobacter pylori is harmful is because it causes stomach cancer. The bacteria damage the stomach lining, which is then repaired by bone marrow stem cells, leading to mutations in the stomach mucosa that can develop into cancer. He pointed out that atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are also risk factors for stomach cancer, necessitating their treatment.

Dr. Marshall stressed the importance of Helicobacter pylori testing for those who are carriers, have a family history of stomach cancer, or are middle-aged and older, to monitor stomach health. He introduced various diagnostic methods and noted that the eradication rate, which used to be near 95%, has recently dropped to 80%. He advised precise medical treatment tailored to individual patients for selecting antibiotics and emphasized the importance of understanding the characteristics of different antibiotics.

Join Nobel laureate Barry Marshall for a lecture series titled "Humans and Helicobacter," where you can learn more about maintaining stomach health.

Barry Marshall is an Australian physiologist. While training as a gastroenterology resident at Royal Perth Hospital, he met pathologist Robin Warren and began serious research on gastritis and peptic ulcers. They observed that a spiral-shaped bacterium was commonly present in the stomachs of patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Despite their claims that this bacterium was causing the ailments, their ideas were initially not accepted. Marshall then deliberately ingested Helicobacter pylori and developed gastritis, thus proving its virulence and infectious nature. His experiment broke the long-standing medical belief that bacteria cannot survive in stomach acid and set a new milestone in treating gastrointestinal diseases.

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005. He currently travels around the world lecturing on the virulence of Helicobacter pylori and the necessity of its eradication, researching cost-effective methods to test for the bacterium.
