Exploring Time Through the Eyes of Physics Beyond Intuition
Carlo Rovelli’s ‘The Science of Time’ revisits our misconceptions about time and explores its true nature through the lens of modern physics.
Does time flow at the same speed everywhere and in only one direction? In Lecture 1, we delve into the fixed ideas about time that we have believed to be true. By answering questions such as “What is the present?” and “What is simultaneity?” we take a step closer to understanding the true nature of time.
Lecture 2 addresses the most common misunderstanding: the "flow of time." If time does not flow, what properties does it possess, and how does it exist in this world? By examining the various equations and scientific laws proposed by countless scientists to explain the universe, we deduce the essence of time.
Carlo Rovelli explains that the feeling of time flowing is closely related to human emotions. How did we create the concept of time and apply it to the world? In Lecture 3, we explore why we feel the passage of time and the special relationship between humans and time.
If the flow of time is merely a concept born of human emotion, what is the scientifically provable essence of time? Carlo Rovelli uses quantum mechanics, a field at the forefront of modern physics, to infer the true nature of time. In Lecture 4, we learn new perspectives on time through three quantum hypotheses about its nature.
