How much do you exactly know about the reality of China’s economy?
China is now the world’s second largest economic power following its rapid growth since the 1990s. However, recently, worries and warnings about Chinese risks abound, from falling growth to a property crisis, falling exports, and a trade war. Where exactly is the Chinese economy at today?
China achieved record growth after it transformed its economy from an agriculture-centered one to an export-oriented one in the 1980s, setting off a “China boom.” However, Professor Hung Ho-fung says that “the Chinese economic model [faces] a lot of headwinds and potential problems,” citing the slow growth of its household consumption and income compared to the GDP. In this lecture series, Professor Hung gives us his outlook on the Chinese economy based on his analysis of the country’s unique economic structure.
Meanwhile, it would be impossible to leave out the ever-worsening US-Sino conflict while discussing China’s economy. Professor Hung Ho-fung goes over the history of US-Sino conflict, an internationally destabilizing rivalry some are calling the “new cold war,” and gives us his assessment of the actual likelihood of a new world war.
