Analyzing the success and failure of new cities from a structural rather than design perspective
Some cities draw people in; others empty out. Richard Peiser locates the difference not in design, but in structure. This lecture series begins with the garden city concept of the nineteenth century and traces how new cities came to be, using the success of Columbia, Maryland as a lens through which to examine the importance of urban structure. He then analyzes why new cities repeatedly fail, through the lens of financial structure and the pace of growth, and identifies governance as the pivotal factor that makes a city actually work. He also compares new city examples from around the world, examining the role and function of city centers, and explores what alternatives new cities might offer in an era of climate crisis. Through this five-part series, Peiser offers a clear view of the decisive conditions that separate cities that thrive from those that fail.
