Mental Health: Understanding and Recovering From Depression.
One in five people experience depression in their lifetime. So, what is this illness that has become as common as a cold? Dr. Linda Gask, a world-renowned research expert on depression, asserts that depression is a wide-ranging illness that affects people’s emotions, thoughts, and physical well-being. As there is no single cause for depression, Dr. Gask emphasizes the importance of focusing on how individuals lose their zest for life.
Having treated patients with depression for nearly 40 years, Dr. Gask affirms that even the most severe depression is treatable. In treatment, the key aspects involve shifting the patient’s negative thinking, re-engaging them with their everyday life, and addressing how their past relationships impact their present. Moreover, she provides a detailed examination of how depression correlates with grief, self-harm, and suicide.
To maintain a healthy state of mind, Dr. Gask stresses the necessity of balancing pleasure and achievement and having a confidante. Her heartfelt advice encourages those suffering from depression not to feel ashamed about accepting care from others or seeking professional help.
In this lecture series titled 'Depression', the first in special series on mental health, Dr. Gask delves into the true nature of depression.
