Over his forty years of research on wealth and democracy, Stephen Krasner came to this conclusion: it’s near impossible for a country to become prosperous and democratic simultaneously. It’s an accomplishment achieved by very few countries.
How can a country acquire wealth and transition to democracy at the same time? Will wealth push a country towards democratization? Why is it so difficult for this process to occur? Stephen Krasner got his PhD in Politics at Harvard University and has been a professor of international relations at Stanford University since 1981. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and the Hoover Institution. He also served at the State Department, taking on the roles of the Director of Policy Planning (2005-2007), a member of the International Security Advisory Board (2008-2009), and a member of the Foreign Policy Advisory Board (2011-2013).
As a scholar and key figure in the State Department, Stephen Krasner has studied the relationship between wealth and democracy for the past four decades and is regarded as an influential authority on international relations.
