China and Its Leaders : Past, Present, and Future

A magnifying glass taken at China’s leaders, their tenure, and even their personal history China’s growth throughout the years up to Xi Jinping’s China Chinese leaders and their legacy as told by David Shambaugh, the top global authority on China

How China’s leaders built the country into a global powerhouse.

China, now the world's second most powerful country after the United States, aims to become a powerhouse of socialist modernization. How did this once-impoverished nation transform into a superpower challenging global hegemony? We look for the answer with Professor David Shambaugh, a leading global authority on China based in the US, the world's political epicenter.
Professor Shambaugh of George Washington University begins by examining the footsteps of Chinese leaders leading up to today's China under Xi Jinping. From Mao Zedong, China's founding father; Deng Xiaoping, who led the nation's economic growth through the reform and opening policy; Jiang Zemin, who accelerated the reform and opening by attracting foreign investment and embracing the capitalist class; Hu Jintao, who expanded the scope of China's foreign relations; to Xi Jinping, China's current president starting his third term – Shambaugh delves into their accomplishments and failures, as well as the hidden personal histories behind their leadership. Through his analysis, we examine how the background and ideology of each leader has influenced present-day China.
