How Democracies Die

A world-leading political scientist at the forefront of contemporary democracy research

An analysis of democratic collapse through the internal workings of democratic systems

In an era when modern democracy feels increasingly precarious, Daniel Ziblatt locates the threat not outside democratic systems but within them. He argues that democracy no longer collapses through coups but is dismantled gradually by leaders who arrive through legitimate elections.

The lectures begin by defining democracy and its conditions, explaining how competition serves as democracy's essential check on power. They then analyze the collapse of the Weimar Republic, identify the warning signs by which authoritarian leaders can be recognized today, and examine the step-by-step strategies authoritarians use to seize power through legal means. The series closes by proposing strategies for resisting democratic backsliding and the conditions required for recovery. Through this seven-part series, viewers are invited not only to understand how democracies die but to reconsider what is worth protecting — and why.
