History of Free Trade

World-class scholar in international trade and consultant to governments around the world

How trade works and the history of free trade

With a prolonged pandemic, wars, and the US-China trade conflict, free trade has wrought extreme economic polarization and inequality. So, how should we trade in the future? Can free trade enrich our lives again? The world-renowned political scientist Vinod Aggarwal says the answer lies in the history of free trade. In his first lecture, he explains the principles of free trade – the theory of absolute and comparative advantage - and how trade strategies can generate profit. In particular, Aggarwal emphasizes how poor countries with low productivity and limited technology should trade to achieve economic growth, and analyzes challenges in international trade like rising unemployment, income inequality, and decreased resource mobility, resulting from monopolies that emerge as markets change.

The lecture also delves into the environmental and human rights issues that arise from trade, as well as the direction of dual-use item industries. The final lecture, an overview of the history of free trade, discusses the principles and achievements of the GATT, which laid the foundation for free trade in the 20th century, and the future of the WTO. Vinod Aggarwal, a world-renowned authority on international politics and economy, explores the past, present, and future of free trade in this lecture series.
