A World-Renowned Realist Political Scientist
Lesson Plan
- Lesson Length : 5 Lessons ㆍ 1 hours 25 miutes
- Language : 한국어, English
A realist analysis of major global conflicts and Korea’s security outlook.
The lecture series by John Mearsheimer, a giant in the field of global political science, is about to begin. In this series, he offers a sharp realist analysis of the world’s most pressing conflicts. Opening with The Israel-Hamas War, Professor Mearsheimer emphasizes that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war is, in essence, a deeper Israel-Palestine conflict. He argues that today’s Israel operates as an apartheid state, where Palestinians fight for freedom, while Israel fights to prevent state collapse. Regarding The Russia-Ukraine War, Mearsheimer contends that the true cause lies not in Putin’s imperial ambitions but in NATO’s expansion toward Russia’s borders, claiming that this war’s conclusion will never come through a peaceful negotiation.
In The U.S.-China Hegemonic Conflict, he explores the nature and issues at the heart of U.S.-China hegemony in East Asia. Then, in Who Will Hold the Next Hegemony?, Mearsheimer examines the impact of a new balance of power and international order, centered around the United States and China, on the global community. In his final lecture, he advises South Korea not to pursue denuclearization and reunification with North Korea, as he believes these outcomes will never be achieved. This five-part series, Why Nations Go to War, by the world-renowned realist political scientist John Mearsheimer, promises to provide profound insight into navigating our chaotic world.

John Mearsheimer is an American political scientist. A graduate of the United States Military Academy and a former U.S. Air Force officer with five years of service, he is an expert in international security and military strategy. Mearsheimer gained scholarly attention by developing the theory of “offensive realism,” which posits that great powers inevitably engage in hegemonic struggles, making it essential for nations to build power for security. In the early 2000s, he accurately predicted the instability of current crises such as the Israel conflict, Ukraine's troubles, and China’s rise, leading many to regard him as one of the foremost analysts and interpreters of state behavior today.
Currently, Professor Mearsheimer devotes his efforts to analyzing global crises and advising on solutions through numerous lectures and international conferences. His publications include <The Israel Lobby>, co-authored with Stephen M. Walt, as well as <The Tragedy of Great Power Politics>, <The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities>, and <How states think>
