Robert David Putnam

How Societies Rise and Fall

In a society rife with division, Robert Putnam reflects on the "good old days,” recognizing that while we have faced severe polarization in the past, similar to what we are experiencing today, there have also been periods of resurgence in unity and cooperation.

Reflecting on the origin of division and distrust.

Robert Putnam steadfastly believes that we have the potential to usher in a new golden age, drawing parallels with historical patterns to affirm that history does indeed repeat itself. However, achieving this requires a meticulous study and analysis of the trajectory our society has followed.
Robert Putnam draws on the great cycles of history, which spans some 120 years, in his quest for solutions to transcend the current atmosphere of selfishness, distrust, and hatred. He contends that by tracing back through the twists and turns of our past, questioning how we ended up creating such a divided society, we can uncover ways to bridge the gaps that separate us. His lecture aims to instill hope in those who have lived through the "good old days," assuring them that such times can return. Simultaneously, it serves to inspire today’s youth, encouraging them to find the will and courage to navigate through these challenging times and contribute to a brighter, more united future.
