Understanding the emotion of love with an expert on sociology and human emotions.
We believe love to be eternal, beautiful, and romantic. However, Eva Illouz, a sociologist, sees it differently. Illouz says romantic love does not exist. How does she then define love?
Illouz explains that love is a socio-cultural phenomenon that has changed with the times. It was a particular favorite of capitalism; the beginning of property rights and development of the leisure culture led love to become one of the main pillars of leisure activities and consumption culture. Visits to the cinema was a popular recreational activity in the late 19th century to early 20th century, when capitalism took hold. Romance featured prominently in movies of the time. Love began to be portrayed in advertising as well, and people began to consume love. Lovers would drive to public places for their dates or have dinner at a fancy restaurant. Illouz also says capitalism brought significant change to love in other ways as well, such as how people choose their partners and how they conduct relationships.
Still, Illouz says love is what completes our humanity, makes it fuller. Love is also what we need to create a good society. In these seven episodes, Illouz delves deep into the emotion of love.

Eva Illouz is the Director of Studies at the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris and teaches Sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel and Zürich University in Switzerland. Illouz brought emotions from the private sphere into the public sphere by analyzing emotions through a sociological lens instead of a psychological perspective, which had been the norm. Through her 30 years of research into emotions and capitalism, she proved how capitalism changes human emotions. Her research into this topic gave her a reputation as one of the most innovative and original researchers in the world and one who united the two seemingly incompatible areas of emotions and the economy.
The American Sociological Association awarded her book, Love and the Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism, with the Outstanding Contribution Award in 2000. She later recieved the Best Book Award from them in 2005 for Oprah Winfrey and the Glamour of Misery: An Essay on Popular Culture. In 2009, Die Zeit, a German newspaper, named Illouz as one of the “12 thinkers most likely to change the thought of tomorrow,” and Le Monde, a French newspaper, named her “a pioneer of a sociological approach to emotions” in 2011. In 2018, Illouz was awarded the Legion d’Honneur, the highest French order of merit, for her contributions to sociology.
