Iranian Spring

A human rights lawyer who devoted her entire life to the human rights of Iranian women and democracy.

Unveiling Iran: Human Rights at the Heart of the 2022 Hijab Protests

In September 2022, the hijab protests in Iran spread around the world and evolved into the Iranian Women's Rights Movement. Shirin Ebadi refers to it as the "hijab revolution," and emphasizes that it is, in fact, a movement for democracy in Iran. In 1979, the Islamic Revolution began by those who were fed up with the corruption of the monarchy, and thus the Islamic Republic of Iran was born. But in the name of Islamic doctrine, the new Iran regressed in terms of women's human rights, starting with the compulsory law for women to wear the hijab. On the other hand, it became legal for a man to marry four women, and regarding matters of child custody, the pendulum of law sways beneficially in favor of men over women. Furthermore, the country has persecuted ethnic groups who believe in minority religions instead of Islam, excluding these followers from attaining rights as citizens.

Despite "equality" being stipulated in the constitution, Shirin Ebadi argues that Iranian society is far from achieving equality. Who is responsible for creating such a discriminatory society? Shirin Ebadi explains that Iran's problems are not caused by the Islamic religion, but by the "autocrats” who have abused Islam as a political tool, a catalyst for the "hijab revolution" in 2022.
