What to do in when the era of capitalism is in crisis
Alex Callinicos's lecture series provide a profound critique of capitalism, contrasting it with the ideals of socialism and examining the potential for societal disasters inherent in these systems. He begins by questioning capitalism's evolutionary path, as theorized by Schumpeter, and argues against the misconception that capitalism will naturally give way to socialism. Callinicos delves into capitalism's core dynamics, such as the competitive accumulation of capital and labor exploitation, highlighting their global impacts and the systemic inequalities they perpetuate.
The series navigates through the historical and contemporary consequences of capitalism, including the environmental crisis, technological alienation, and the commodification of education. Callinicos critiques the neoliberal era for exacerbating social disparities and destabilizing welfare systems, with a particular focus on the 2007-2009 financial crisis as a critical juncture that questioned neoliberalism's sustainability. Globalization and its discontents are examined for their role in deepening economic divides and cultural homogenization.
