Korea and Japan: Modern History That Has Yet to End

History of 150 years of embittered Korean-Japanese relations as seen by a Western scholar A must-watch lecture by the historian Alexis Dudden, a leading US expert on the history of Korean-Japanese relations Alexis Dudden says, we must “take a victim-centered approach” to history.

The modern history of Korea and Japan, viewed through a third-party perspective.

From issues surrounding “comfort women” to forced labor, military actions, and historical distortions in textbooks, Korea and Japan have always had differing perspectives on their shared modern history. What would this history look like from a third-party point of view, neither Korean nor Japanese? World-renowned East Asia historian Alexis Dudden approaches Korea and Japan's modern history differently from the typical textbook narratives filled with names and dates or ideological approaches.

Alexis Dudden begins her series by detailing Japan's transformation into a Great Power post-Perry Expedition, focusing on the strategic measures Japan adopted. She then analyzes the Treaty of Portsmouth and the role of the Hague Emissaries in Japan's occupation of Korea, exploring the international dynamics that facilitated this outcome.

Continuing her exploration, Dudden addresses the harsh realities of Japanese military rule in Korea, particularly through the trial related to the 105-Man Incident and insights from foreign witnesses. She further examines post-war treaties that impacted Japan-Korea relations, including labor compensation and the Sado Mines issue. The final lectures provide an updated view on the enduring tensions over "comfort women" and peace statues, highlighting contemporary historical disputes between Korea and Japan.
