Exploring the Lives and History of Medieval Commoners Through Europe's Night
Professor Carlo Ginzburg explores witches, the Benandanti, and werewolves in medieval Europe through religious trial records. These records, such as those of Chiara Signorini from Modena, reveal the societal roles attributed to witches in medieval times. The Benandanti, central figures in 16th-century Italian religious trials, were engaged in a battle against witches despite denying being witches themselves. This contradiction raises questions about their societal labeling during their era, revealing a mystery surrounding their identity.
Ginzburg challenges misconceptions about medieval witch gatherings, investigating the reality behind images of witches riding brooms or gathering naked around bonfires, as seen in religious trial records. Werewolves also feature in Ginzburg's exploration, intertwined with medieval witch trials across Europe. Accounts from figures like Hermann Bote and Caspar Peucer provide glimpses into encounters with werewolves, adding depth to Ginzburg's analysis.
