The Rise of Capitalism: How It Became the World’s Dominant Order
About 30 years ago, when East Germans tore down the Berlin Wall on their own, it effectively led capitalism to be more firmly accepted by the world as an irreplaceable system. However, Donald Sassoon says capitalism hasn't had an unwavering victory. How should we view capitalism and what future should we envision as we live in a capitalist world that is accompanied by various contradictions and social inequality?
Donald Sassoon sheds light on the period from 1860 to World War I as the time of capitalism's rise, covering the history of capitalism through the process of the system's establishment and continuance. Following his lecture, which reveals and traces the history of democracy, imperialism, and nationalism that are all intertwined behind capitalism, we can confirm the process by which capitalism has established the world order and diagnose the problems that accompany it.
The capitalist system constantly demands growth despite facing various problems such as the depletion of resources, environmental issues, and climate change. In this unstable era, Donald Sassoon's lecture will have us questioning ourselves about capitalism that we have been taking for granted, and serve as an indicator through which we look back on our daily lives within it.
