Tracing the evolution of pop culture, from Shakespeare to Netflix.
How did the Mona Lisa, relatively obscure in the 19th century, become a universally recognized masterpiece within two centuries? How did the early opera houses, much akin to 20th-century nightclubs, evolve into symbols of mainstream culture? British historian Donald Sassoon, having penned nearly 3,000 pages over a decade on the history of popular culture from the 1800s to the 2000s, explores these phenomena.
A global authority in comparative European history, Sassoon meticulously dissects, over seven lectures, how and when music, once exclusive to the affluent, became universal, and how novels and films, originally typical products of subcultures, ascended to the heart of popular culture. In particular, he focuses on the rules of pop culture success: as culture is international, adaptation is the key to success in an increasingly globalized cultural landscape. Projecting that the development of technology will make culture more fragmented and diverse, this renowned historian predicts that this diversification will be the key to achieving global success for Korean content. From Shakespeare to Netflix, we delve into the lesser-known history of popular culture.
