An exploration of Beethoven's musical experiments and human character through his piano works
Markus Groh's lecture series on Beethoven and the Piano offers a profound exploration of Beethoven's musical world, centered on his piano works. Why is Beethoven — who kept striving towards new forms and expressions even as he suffered the anguish of losing his hearing — called the first modern composer?
The first two lectures trace the origins of Beethoven's compositional world through his life and musical formation. Subsequent lectures illuminate formal transformation and expansion, and experiments with rhythm and harmony, across a range of piano works including sonatas, variation sets, and concertos. Particular attention is given to Beethoven's creative method of following established rules while boldly crossing their boundaries, and to the process by which he transformed suffering and despair into musical innovation. The late sonatas and large-scale works are then examined to show how emotional depth and structural mastery are pushed to their limits. Moving beyond the experience of hearing familiar masterpieces in a new light, the series invites viewers to reconsider what Beethoven the man was trying to say through his music.Full Bio
