How Pictures Tell a Story

An internationally renowned writer and illustrator of picture books who received the Hans Christian Andersen Award.

Inside the Mind of Anthony Browne: Reflections and Interpretations

Anthony Browne (78), a world-renowned picture book writer whom adults are crazier about rather than kids, paid a visit. Facing 80-years-old, he says there are still a lot of stories that he wants to write. What is the source of his unabated imagination? What drew him to the world of picture books? Anthony Browne recalls his childhood when he liked to draw. He says that the shape game, which he used to enjoy playing with his older brother, provided him the springboard for becoming a picture book writer and inspired him to write his first picture book, Through the Magic Mirror

While creating his book Gorilla, which gave him stardom as an internationally renowned picture book writer, he realized for the first time that words and illustration play different roles in picture books. He shows us how illustrations create stories through the color, composition, comparison, and contrast of the illustrations in his picture book, Gorilla. He introduces Piggybook, which has the most interpretations out of all his work. He emphasizes how family members are different from each other and how they change with every moment of life. He honestly reveals the controversy and backstory about Pigybook.  When he talks about Willy the Wimp, a character he had projected from his childhood when he was fragile and weak, he contemplates on true courage.

Take time to feel the joy of picture books through this lecture series, <How Pictures Tell a Story>, by world-renowned picture book writer, Anthony Browne.
