Ken Loach: His Life, His Films, His Global Impact
Ken Loach, a beloved director of the Cannes Film Festival and icon of British cinematic realism, reflects on his life as a filmmaker over the past 60 years.
Ken Loach talks about his childhood first, which influenced his worldview. He discusses his beliefs and philosophy about comedy that were shaped as he grew up in a British working-class family. He discusses why he chose to bring working-class protagonists to the forefront. He talks about his experience making TV movies during his days as a producer at BBC, and his views on cinema. He then discusses the political irony he felt firsthand while living in 1960s Britain. He also reflects on the efforts he and his colleagues put into telling working-class stories through films amid such turmoil. The 1970s were a particularly difficult time for Ken Loach, whose films have always been about the lives and struggles of the working class. He talks about the censorship he faced while making a documentary about miners who were in danger of losing their jobs and their homes. Tune in to hear about the experiences of the miners and Ken Loach who struggled against the British government and the mainstream media.
He shares his filmmaking techniques of British social realist films. You will learn about the essence of British realist filmmaking, which is very different from Hollywood or other filmmaking techniques, including how to cast good actors, how to direct actors to create iconic scenes, how to use the camera, and how to make use of lighting and sound.
For his final topic, he talks about "The Responsibilities of Filmmakers." As an outspoken critic of his country's policies, he still receives a barrage of criticism from his political opponents.
