Moving beyond function-driven architecture to restore human sensation and lived experience
The architecture filling our cities today is becoming increasingly uniform and inhuman. Thomas Heatherwick argues that this trend dulls people's senses and impoverishes the experience of urban life. In this lecture series, he redefines architecture not as a structure that serves a function, but as a space of experience — a place where people feel and live. He analyzes the forces that produce boring buildings and emphasizes the sensibility and mindset that designers must bring to their work. He also examines how large-scale architecture can conflict with human perception and explains the importance of spaces designed at a human scale. He further explores the role of architecture in connecting individuals and society, and presents ways to restore the sensory richness of cities through preservation and adaptive reuse rather than demolition. Through this five-part series, Heatherwick invites us to reconsider what kind of experiences the spaces we inhabit should create.
