The Art of Circus

The man behind Cirque du Soleil and the greatest shows on earth

The secret and management philosophy behind Cirque du Soleil's success

45 productions, 1,155 performing artists, $1 billion in annual revenue, 400 million cumulative audience members, and performances in 450 locations in 44 countries around the world every year. These are the numbers that make up Cirque du Soleil. The hard-earned fruits after 30 years and a number of crises survived since its founding in 1984 by a group of street performers in Quebec, Canada. Cirque du Soleil has been praised for breaking circus stereotypes to elevate it to a spectacular art created by the human body and technology together.

Daniel Lamarre, who joined Cirque du Soleil in 2001 and has been leading the organization for 23 years, says the secret to Cirque du Soleil's success is creativity. Every member of the company strives to improve their creativity: not only the artists who perform on stage, but the costume designers, stage managers, and even administrative and accounting staff.

Daniel Lamarre emphasizes that creativity can improve efficiency in the workplace everywhere, not just in entertainment companies like Cirque du Soleil. His management philosophy is to constantly create space for all employees to voice their opinions, regardless of their position or department. Daniel Lamarre, the management expert who went to the circus, shares his management philosophy and know-how.

"Invoke the imagination, provoke the senses, and evoke the emotions of people around the world." These are the words on the wall of Cirque du Soleil's headquarters in Quebec City, Canada. Founded in 1984, the legendary entertainment company has been captivating audiences around the world with its shows for 30 years. These are the words that people who make that show happen take to heart every day.

Leading them from the front is Executive Vice-President Daniel Lamarre. Lamarre, a former journalist who majored in communications, is a business expert who has served as head of a public relations agency and president of Canada's most-watched TV network. He joined Cirque du Soleil in 2001 as CEO, overseeing the production and management of the show. During his 20 years as CEO, he pulled off global triumphs such as organizing a collaboration with pop legend The Beatles and won the The Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement for stage productions that utilize cutting-edge science and technology.

In the business world, he is known for his talent for crisis response. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cirque du Soleil was forced to lay off 95% of its employees due to economic difficulties and was on the verge of bankruptcy; however, it dramatically recovered from the crisis within just four months. The company is now recognized as one of the best entertainment companies in the world, attracting even larger audiences than before the pandemic. We find out where Daniel Lamarre's management skills stem from.
