David Buss

Mating Strategies

His research shows that love is a scientific phenomenon, not just an individual emotion. Buss says that all around the world, women prioritize men's economic prowess while men prioritize women's looks. He argues that this is the culmination of how our ancestors evolved to survive the challenges they faced. As our ancestors evolved using mating strategies to choose partners and be chosen, the strategies eventually started to drive their behavior.

The mating strategies of men and women, an empical exploration across 37 cultures.

Dr. Buss’s scientific analysis of the psychological mechanisms that make men and women fall in love, marry, cheat, and divorce could ultimately help reduce conflict between the sexes in society today. "Why do men and women fall in love?" "Why do people cheat, even when they claim to love one another?" David Buss, an evolutionary psychologist provides empirical insights into these mysteries of mutual desire. By studying 37 different cultures spanning Asia, Europe, and Africa, Dr. Buss has empirically exposed sexual behaviors and psychological mechanisms common to humanity, thereby creating a theory on the mating strategies of men and women.
According to his research, love is not just a fluctuation of personal emotions but rather a scientific phenomenon. Globally, women prioritize a man's economic prowess, while men place a greater emphasis on a woman's physical appearance. Dr. Buss argues, "This is the result of how our ancestors evolved to survive the challenges they faced." He explains that the mating strategies our ancestors used to select partners and be chosen as partners have become the driving force behind human behavior. Dr. Buss's scientific analysis of the psychological mechanisms that cause men and women to fall in love, marry, cheat, and divorce could ultimately provide a means to reduce conflict between the sexes in contemporary society.

What is human nature? Why do men and women fall in love? What psychological mechanisms exist within the human brain? These are some of the profound questions David Buss, a pioneer with a deep fascination for the human mind, has sought answers to. Even after obtaining his doctorate in psychology at UC Berkeley, he remained dedicated to these unanswered mysteries. Through extensive research, Buss scientifically proved the existence of psychological mechanisms, the driving forces behind human behavior, drawing from Darwin's theory of evolution and sexual selection. His work laid the foundation for a new field known as evolutionary psychology.

Dr. Buss is one of the founding figures of modern evolutionary psychology, and his research has shed light on diverse subjects like love, dating, sex, marriage, and the differing desires and mating strategies of men and women. His books, including "The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating," "Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind," and "Sex, Power, Conflict: Evolutionary and Feminist Perspectives," serve as seminal introductory texts to the field of evolutionary psychology.

Dr. Buss served as the President of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES), a leading association in evolutionary psychology. From 2003 to 2015, he was recognized by the U.S. Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as one of the world's most cited researchers. Currently, he holds a professorship in the psychology department at the University of Texas at Austin.
