What is a Semiconductor?

A Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), globally recognized for research in semiconductor devices and integrated circuits.

A 20-part series on the past and future of semiconductors and their role in electronics.

How did a device as small as a smartphone come to include a computer, internet access, and a camera? This innovation was made possible by integrated circuits, also known as semiconductor chips, which have driven the miniaturization and high performance of electronic devices. An integrated circuit, or semiconductor chip, contains billions of transistors, and the primary component of these transistors is the semiconductor, the cornerstone of modern electronics.

Professor Jack Lee, a globally recognized scholar and IEEE Fellow, has prepared a twenty-part  lecture series titled "What is a Semiconductor?" This series explores the origins of semiconductors, the reasons silicon was chosen as the material, and the basic principles of semiconductor devices. It also delves into the detailed processes of the eight major steps in semiconductor manufacturing. Following this, the series examines the development of transistors, one of the key semiconductor devices that revolutionized electronic devices and looks ahead to the future of semiconductors. Often referred to as the "oil of the future," semiconductors hold the key to what lies ahead. This lecture series aims to address these questions and more.
